Tijarafe

Tijarafe is a Spanish municipality located in the northwest part of La Palma Island, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.  Puntagorda borders it to Tijarafethe north, to the east is the summit of the mountain, to the west is the sea, and to the south are the municipalities of Tazacorte, Los Llanos and El Paso de Aridane.
Tijarafe was also the name of one of the twelve districts in which the island was divided in the pre-Columbian period, which included the current municipalities of Tijarafe and Puntagorda.

Its superficial extent is 53.76 square kilometers, which represents 7.59% of the surface of the island.  Its perimeter is at about 36,584 meters.  With this surface, Tijarafe is in fifth place in size of the municipalities of La Palma, behind El Paso, Garafia, Mazo and Fuencaliente.  The coast, steep and inaccessible, has an approximate length of 11.5 kilometers, representing 9.3% of the total island perimeter.
The topography of the terrain is very steep and rugged with a continuous slope from the summit to the sea, cut by numerous ravines.  The slope softens between 400 and 800 meters, and the majority of people live at this elevation.  The coastal part is cut into the final stretch of the cliffs and ends in a cliff of almost 200 linear meters.

Although the coast is a major part of the limits of Tijarafe, it has few beaches and places where they can access the sea; because of this feature there are no reasons to address activities in the aquatic environment.

The climate is very sunny and dry.  The rains are usually very rare, and typically occur between October and April, inclusive.  The altitude at which the municipality is located above sea level has led to its quite high settlement.
Business
Tijarafe’s economy revolves around agriculture and livestock. Agriculture is the occupation of 69% of the population, being especially dedicated to the cultivation of bananas, as this is the most profitable.
The LP-1 road, from Santa Cruz de la Palma to Puntagorda, crosses the town from south to north, and on both sides of the road is where most of the houses are located.
