San Andres y Sauces

San Andres y Sauces is a municipality situated in the north of La Palma. The zip code is 38720.  It has an area of 42.75 square kilometers and a bannana plantationpopulation of 4,972 inhabitants (2008). The altitude at the center of town (The Willow) is 250 meters above sea level.
For some time there were two separate peoples, San Andres on the coast and Los Sauces in the midlands.  After the sugarcane crisis the populations of the two declined and eventually, due to the crossing point of the north road, they joined.  Los Sauces grew in population, while San Andres had stalled.
The town is noted for its laurel forest, deep ravines, terraces and bananas.  Some places of interest are the Los Tilos forest and ravines, and the population centers, where we find good examples of traditional architecture.

The economy revolves primarily around the banana.  The only other major crop is cane sugar, used in the only distillery on the island to produce Ron Aldea rum.  Another minor crop is the yam, grown on the slopes of moist, logged gullies.
On the coast is Puerto Espindola, a small fishing port that was previously the main means of communication in the municipality before the road was built in the twentieth century.
The natural pools of Charco Azul, a small resort town, are also on the coast.
