Garafia

Garafia canary is a municipality located in the northwest of the island of La Palma.  The capital city is called Santo Domingo, which is situated at an altitude of 400 meters.  The other neighborhoods are Tricias, Adalid John, Don Pedro, La Mata, “The Table”, “Roque Faro” and French. The zip code is 38787.

Garafia has 25.50 kilometers of coastline, and a total area of 103 square kilometers.  It has a population of 1,849 inhabitants (National Institute of Statistics, January 2007). Roque de los Muchachos is in the town, which at 2,426 meters is the highest point of the island.  There is an important astrophysical observatory here, belonging to the IAC.

The people of Garafia have traditionally been seen as isolated and having difficulty communicating.  This has led to developmental problems for the municipality and a decline in population.  But it has preserved its rural and ecological characteristics, and therefore has a great potential for rural tourism.
