Brena Baja

Brena Baja is a municipality situated in the east of La Palma.  Its maximum Brena Bajaaltitude is 1800 meters above sea level and its coastline is 7.28 km long.  The popular adjective for natural Brena Alta Brena Baja and is Brenusco.

Brena Baja is bordered on the north by the municipality of Brena Alta, on the south by Villa de Mazo, by El Paso to the west, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

In response to the volcanic terrain and its vegetation, colonizers of the area named it The Brenas.  During the conquest, the oldest settlements of Barranco del Humo, Los Guincho, and Los Cancajos were located in lowland areas.

Contact between the aboriginal people of the archipelago and the European navigators, who were immersed in the first expansion overseas, became progressively more frequent from the mid-fourteenth century and throughout the fifteenth century.

The canton of Tedote was not able to resist the Castilian troops of Adelantado Alonso Fernandez de Lugo in 1492. After the conquest, Alonso Fernandez de Lugo distributed the land and waters among the conquerors and settlers.  The European colonizers were mostly of Portuguese origin.
The export of wines to the American colonies represented the principal wealth of the island, so much so that it became large scale in India and all these islands.  This wealth altered the ownership structure, generating the formation of large landowners.
At first, the church of San Jose was attached to a simple parish church of San Pedro de Brena High, head of the church site.  Its foundation dates back to 1548.  The division was achieved on November 28, 1634.  Since then, Brena Baja, under the leadership of the mayor, gained in its capacity for goods and institutions.
Carlos III, issued orders of protection as the area was considered attractive, and thus urged the building of a stronghold, where previously another battery had been destroyed by a flood in 1694.  Under the implementation of the decree of the Cortes of Cadiz on May 26, 1812, Brena Baja became an independent municipality. The old fort was refurbished to house the Houses Consistoriales.
In July 1949, Brena Baja was awarded the title of Most Honorable and Noble Villa.

Attractions
Mountain of Brena
High in the mountains of Brena, near the border with Mazo, is the viewpoint of the same name, where you can see the entire valley and part of the Brenas Mazo.

Religious buildings
The ancient church of San Jose, now closed to worship, housed valuable images, such as a sixteenth-century Flemish Santa Ana.  This and other images are now in the new church of San Jose.  The Church also boasts custody of gilt silver cross with emeralds, the work of Indians of the seventeenth century.
Playa de los Cancajos
On the coast of the town is the beach Los Cancajos, one of the main tourist areas of the island.  Its beaches are of black sand that has gone through changes from original volcanic lava.
