Brena Alta

Originally consisting of the area of Buenavista and The Brena, Brena Alta is a municipality situated in the east of the island.  It has an area of 30.82 square kilometers, with 1.30 kilometers of coastline, and a population of 7,184 Brena Altainhabitants as of 2007.  The city has grown in recent years due to the lack of housing in the capital, which is adjacent.  The town is 350 meters above sea level.

It has a fishing port and an artificial beach on the coast in the neighborhood of Bajamar, and several industrial zones.  The town is famous for its production of snuff.  The town is also home to the Risco de la Concepcion, which was initially called the Palma Asomada.  The name was changed when the shrine was built.

Brena Alta was awarded the Queen Sofia 2005 Universal Accessibility award, which is designed to recognize the work of Spain’s cities in the removal of architectural barriers.  The recognition was for municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants.

The population of Brena Alta is involved in many sports, with football teams (The Brenas SDAtlantida and EF), basketball teams (Doguen CB, CB Brena High) and other team athletics. There are also indigenous sports, such as the fight or jump canaria.
