Barlovento

Barlovento is a municipality is situated in the north of the island of La Palma.  It has an area of 43.55 square kilometers and a population of 2,387 Barloventoinhabitants, according to the 2008 census.  Its altitude is 548 meters above sea level, and it has 6.43 kilometers of coastline.

The current municipality of Barlovento matches the canton or lordship of prehispanic Tagaragre.  At the end of the conquest, the land and waters were distributed among the participants in the campaigns.  In the year 1508, Alonso Fernandez de Lugo was to share fifteen parcels for farming, at the end of Barlovento, with his nephew, Pedro Fernandez Senorino.

Through the port of Talavera, Barlovento joined the triangular trade characteristic of the islands after colonization.  The end of the sugar cycle, in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, marks the beginning of the replacement of the reeds through the vineyards, making wine the main product of export for the economy.  With the implementation of the provisions of the Constitution adopted by the Cortes of Cadiz in 1812, Barlovento became its own city.
